Lip Fillers in Dubai — hyaluronic acid lip augmentation

What lip filler is, and what one syringe actually does

Lip filler is a gel of hyaluronic acid — a substance the body already makes and already holds in the skin — injected into and around the lips to add volume, define the border, correct asymmetry or restore shape that has flattened with age. It is temporary and it is reversible, and both of those facts matter more than most people realise before they book.

What the gel is, and why it is not permanent

The gels used are cross-linked hyaluronic acid. Cross-linking is what makes them hold a shape instead of dissolving straight away; the tighter the cross-linking, the firmer the gel and the longer it lasts. The body breaks them down gradually over months. Nothing permanent is placed in the lips, and permanent lip implants and permanent fillers are a different category of treatment with a different and higher risk profile.

What 1 ml looks like, and how much is used

Filler is sold and priced by the syringe, and the standard syringe is 1 ml — about a fifth of a teaspoon. Spread across an upper and lower lip that is a small amount, and in a first treatment it usually reads as a subtle change rather than a dramatic one. Most first-time patients are treated with 1 ml. Half a syringe is often enough for definition alone or for correcting a small asymmetry. More than 1 ml in a single session is rarely appropriate for lips that have never been treated: tissue needs to stretch gradually, and overfilling in one sitting is the most common route to a result that looks done.

A patient asking for a visible change from one syringe should hear this at the consultation rather than after. Where a bigger change is the goal, it is built over two or three sessions spaced weeks apart, and the second session is planned once the first has settled.

What lip filler can change

Volume in the body of the lip. Definition of the vermillion border, which is the line where lip meets skin. Projection, so the lip sits forward rather than only wider. The shape of the cupid’s bow. Asymmetry between left and right, or between upper and lower. Fine vertical lines at the lip border, where a soft gel placed superficially works better than a firm one. And hydration — hyaluronic acid holds water, and lips that have simply become dry and thin often improve from that alone.

What it cannot change

It does not lift a lip that has descended with age; that is a different problem and sometimes a surgical one — see upper lip lift. It does not fix the position of the teeth underneath, and lips are draped over teeth, so dental crowding or a receding jaw changes what filler can achieve. It does not remove deep smoker’s lines on its own. And it will not make one person’s lips look like another person’s: the result is bounded by your own anatomy, your skin thickness and how much your tissue will stretch.

Techniques, and which one fits which lip

Classic volume augmentation

Gel is placed in the body of the lip to add fullness, usually with a softer product so the lip stays mobile and soft to touch. Suits lips that have lost volume with age or were always thin, and it is the technique most people mean when they say lip filler.

The Russian lip technique

A vertical injection pattern that lifts the height of the lip and flattens the projection, giving a flatter, wider, more heart-shaped lip rather than a forward-projecting one. It uses many small deposits placed vertically from the border toward the centre, so it takes longer and swells more in the first days than a classic augmentation.

It suits a lip with a clear cupid’s bow and reasonable skin quality. It does not suit everyone: on a lip with heavy tissue or an already long distance between nose and lip, the flattening effect works against the face. This is a technique to choose after an examination, not from a photograph on social media.

Border definition without volume

A small amount placed along the vermillion border sharpens the outline and stops lipstick migrating into the fine lines above the lip. Often the whole of what a patient actually wanted, and it uses far less than a full syringe.

Lip hydration

Very soft, minimally cross-linked hyaluronic acid placed superficially to improve texture and moisture rather than shape. Useful for lips that look dry, creased and dull rather than deflated, and a sensible first step for a patient who is unsure about volume. See also biorevitalization.

Perioral lines around the mouth

The fine vertical lines above the upper lip respond to a combination of a soft filler placed in the lines themselves and support restored to the lip border. Deep, long-standing lines in thin, sun-damaged skin need resurfacing rather than filler alone, and that is said at the consultation rather than discovered afterwards.

The lip flip — not filler at all

A small muscle-relaxing injection into the muscle around the mouth lets the upper lip roll slightly outward, showing more pink without adding volume. It is a different treatment with a different product, it lasts a few months, and it is sometimes what a patient with a thin, tight upper lip actually needs. It is mentioned here because it is routinely confused with filler.

Needle or cannula

A needle is sharp and precise and is generally used for fine border work and small deposits. A cannula is blunt-tipped, enters through a single entry point and pushes vessels aside rather than piercing them, which lowers the risk of injecting into a vessel and usually bruises less. Neither is right for every case, and a practitioner who uses only one for everything is choosing by habit. Which is used, and why, should be part of the conversation before the syringe is opened.

Lip contouring: shaping the border, not adding volume

Lip contouring and volume augmentation are two different tasks, and they use the filler differently. Contouring works along the vermilion border, the philtral columns and the Cupid’s bow: the gel is placed in small amounts to define the outline and to even out asymmetry, without changing lip size noticeably.

Contouring is usually considered when the lips are proportionate but the border has become less defined — this often happens with age, as the border flattens and lipstick starts to feather. It is also used to even out a step between the upper and lower lip, or to soften a downturned corner.

The technique differs from volume augmentation: less product, more superficial placement and a different needle or cannula path. Volume work usually starts at one syringe; contouring alone often needs less.

Lip fillers at ELEMENTAL start from AED 1,600 per syringe. Individual results vary; a consultation is required to decide whether contouring, volume or a combination suits your anatomy. Prices updated: September 2026.

Safety: the part most lip filler pages leave out

Lip filler is a medical procedure, not a beauty service, and the reason it must be done by a licensed doctor in a licensed facility is contained in this section.

Vascular occlusion

The complication that matters is vascular occlusion — filler entering or compressing an artery, cutting the blood supply to the tissue it feeds. Around the lips and nose the vessels are small, numerous and variable, and this is the region where it is reported most often. Early signs are severe pain out of proportion to the procedure, blanching of the skin, then a dusky, mottled discolouration. Left untreated it leads to tissue death and permanent scarring; in rare cases involving vessels higher in the face it has caused vision loss.

It is uncommon. It is also a time-critical emergency: treated within hours with an enzyme that dissolves hyaluronic acid, plus supporting measures, the tissue usually recovers. This is exactly why the treatment belongs in a facility that holds that enzyme on site, has a doctor who can recognise the signs, and can see you the same day if something changes at home.

How the risk is reduced

Anatomical knowledge of where the labial arteries run. Aspiration or the use of a blunt cannula where appropriate. Small volumes, slow injection, low pressure. Not injecting into an area of previous permanent filler of unknown type. And an unhurried consultation, because the patient who is rushed is the patient who does not mention the treatment they had elsewhere last month.

The ordinary side effects

Swelling for two to five days, and lips swell more than anywhere else on the face. Bruising, which is common and can last a week. Tenderness. Small lumps that usually soften within two weeks and can be massaged or, if they persist, dissolved. Asymmetry in the first days, which is usually swelling rather than the result. Reactivation of cold sores in people who get them — tell the doctor beforehand, because it is preventable. Delayed nodules weeks or months later, which are uncommon and treatable.

Who should not have lip filler

Pregnancy and breastfeeding. Active infection, or an active cold sore, in or around the mouth. A known allergy to any component of the gel. Autoimmune disease in an active phase, or immunosuppression, without clearance from the treating physician. A bleeding disorder or anticoagulation that cannot be safely managed. Unrealistic expectations, and body dysmorphic disorder. Permanent filler already in the lips from elsewhere, until it is known exactly what it is. Recent dental work, or dental work planned in the coming days.

Dissolving filler

Hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved with an injected enzyme, which is what makes them reversible and is a genuine advantage over permanent products. Dissolving is used for an unsatisfactory result, for lumps that do not settle, for over-filled lips built up over years, and as the emergency treatment for vascular occlusion. It works within days, it is not always complete in one session, and it also dissolves the hyaluronic acid your own tissue holds — so lips can look flatter than their natural baseline for a few weeks before recovering.

The appointment, and what the first two weeks look like

The consultation

Before anything is injected: what you want changed, in your own words; examination of the lips at rest and smiling, and of the proportion between upper and lower; medical history, medication, allergies, cold sores, and any filler you have had before, where and when. If you do not know what product was used elsewhere, say so — it changes the plan. You are told which technique fits, how much is proposed, what it will and will not do, and the price in writing before you agree.

The procedure

Numbing cream for around twenty minutes, and most gels also contain a local anaesthetic. The injection itself takes fifteen to thirty minutes depending on the technique. Most patients describe pressure rather than pain. You will be shown a mirror during the treatment, not only at the end.

Days one to three

Swelling peaks in the first 24 to 48 hours and lips can look considerably larger than the intended result. This is normal and it is not the result. Ice in short intervals, sleep with the head slightly raised, no hot showers or hot drinks on the first evening. Bruising, if it appears, shows up on day one or two.

Week one

Most of the swelling goes by day four or five. Bruising fades over a week and can be covered with makeup after 24 hours. Small firm areas are common and usually soften on their own. Do not judge the shape yet.

Weeks two to four

The gel settles and integrates, and what you see at two weeks is close to the true result. A review at two weeks is when any adjustment is made — not before, because injecting into a swollen lip is guesswork. Small top-ups at that review are common and expected, and at ELEMENTAL the plan is discussed as a two-appointment sequence from the start.

Aftercare rules

No touching or pressing the lips for the rest of the day, and no massaging unless you are told to. No makeup on the lips for 24 hours. No alcohol for 24 hours — it worsens swelling and bruising. No strenuous exercise, sauna, steam room or hot yoga for 48 hours. No sun bed and no prolonged direct sun. Nothing that presses on the lips: no straws for the first day, and for a few days no face-down massage.

Flying, dentist, exercise and other treatments

Flying: wait 24 to 48 hours where possible; cabin pressure does not damage filler but it does add to swelling, and a long flight straight after treatment makes day two worse. Dentist: leave two weeks either side, because prolonged mouth stretching and dental injections in a freshly treated lip raise the risk of infection and displacement. Exercise: 48 hours. Other facial treatments — lasers, peels, energy devices over the lip area — two weeks. If you have an event, plan the treatment at least two weeks before it, never the week of.

How long it lasts, what it costs in Dubai, and who treats you

How long the result lasts

Typically six to twelve months in the lips, which is shorter than most other areas of the face — lips move constantly, and movement breaks the gel down faster. What shortens it: a fast metabolism, regular intense exercise, smoking, high sun exposure, and softer gels. What lengthens it: firmer products, smaller movement, and repeat treatments, because tissue that has held filler before often holds the next one longer.

The result does not vanish on a date. It fades gradually, and most patients notice at around eight to ten months that the definition has gone before the volume has.

Cost of lip fillers in Dubai

Lip fillers at ELEMENTAL from AED 1,600. The price is confirmed in writing after the consultation, once the doctor has examined you and the amount and the product are agreed.

What moves the figure: how many syringes are planned, which gel is chosen — a firm structural gel and a soft hydrating one are not the same price — and whether the border, the perioral lines or the lower face are treated in the same session. Ask any clinic you compare with two questions: is the price per syringe or per session, and is the two-week review included. A headline figure that turns out to be half a syringe, or that excludes the review, is not comparable.

Be wary of prices far below the market. Filler is a regulated medical device, and a price that cannot cover a genuine product plus a licensed doctor plus a licensed facility is telling you something about at least one of the three.

Top-ups

A two-week review is part of the treatment, and a small top-up there is normal rather than a sign something went wrong. After that, most patients return at eight to twelve months. Building volume gradually over sessions gives a better result than trying to reach the goal in one appointment, and it costs the same in total.

Who performs the treatment

At ELEMENTAL lip filler is performed by DHA-licensed doctors: Dr. Olivera Nikolic, Specialist Dermatologist, Dr. Muntaser Alawi, Specialist Dermatologist, Dr. Akshatha Dinakar, Dr. Egor Adamovich and Dr. Nour Elhouda Touati. Treatment takes place at the day surgical centre in Jumeirah 1, Dubai, which holds the enzyme used to dissolve hyaluronic acid on site.

Your consultation

You leave the consultation with a plan, a written price and a clear statement of what the treatment will and will not do — not with a decision you are expected to make in the chair. If the honest answer is that what you are asking for does not suit your anatomy, or that you would be better served by a different treatment or by nothing at all, you will be told that.
