Breast reduction in Dubai

Breast reduction (reduction mammaplasty): what the operation does

Breast reduction, or reduction mammaplasty, removes breast tissue, fat and excess skin and reshapes what remains into a smaller, higher breast. Unlike a breast lift, which changes position without changing size, a reduction changes both: lifting is always part of the operation, but the defining goal is to reduce weight and volume.

Of all the operations in aesthetic breast surgery, reduction is the one most often carried out for physical symptoms rather than appearance. Patients typically describe the same cluster: aching in the neck, upper back and shoulders, grooving where bra straps cut in, skin irritation or fungal infection in the fold beneath the breast, difficulty finding clothes that fit, and exercise avoided because it is uncomfortable.

At ELEMENTAL Day Surgical Center in Jumeirah 1, Dubai, every reduction begins with a clinical assessment: the degree of hypertrophy, the position of the nipple relative to the fold, skin quality, body weight and its stability, and any breast findings that need investigating before surgery is planned. Individual results vary, and a consultation is required before any procedure can be planned.

Gynecomastia — enlarged glandular breast tissue in men — is a different operation with a different technique and is covered on our gynecomastia surgery page.

When breast reduction is considered

Reduction is discussed where the size of the breast itself is causing problems. The assessment looks at symptoms, not at cup size alone — two people with the same measurement can have very different symptom burdens depending on frame, posture and tissue density.

  • Persistent pain in the neck, upper back or shoulders that improves when the breast weight is supported
  • Deep grooving of the shoulders from bra straps
  • Recurring intertrigo — irritation, rash or fungal infection in the inframammary fold
  • Marked asymmetry between the two sides
  • Restricted physical activity, or difficulty with posture
  • Breast size that changed substantially after pregnancy, breastfeeding or weight gain and has not settled

Timing matters. Surgery is normally deferred until body weight has been stable for several months, until at least six months after breastfeeding has ended, and until any planned future pregnancy has been considered — pregnancy and significant weight change can alter the result.

Where the concern is position rather than volume, the appropriate operation is a breast lift. Where the breast has lost volume and you want it restored, see breast augmentation or lipofilling.

Techniques: vertical, anchor and liposuction-assisted reduction

Vertical (lollipop) reduction

An incision around the areola and a vertical line down to the fold. It suits small and moderate reductions and leaves no scar in the fold itself. The breast is reshaped from within, so the result depends less on skin tension.

Anchor (inverted-T, Wise pattern) reduction

Around the areola, vertically down, and along the fold. This is the standard approach for larger reductions and for marked skin excess: it gives the greatest control over shape and allows the most tissue to be removed. The horizontal scar sits in the fold, where a bra covers it.

Liposuction-assisted reduction

Where the breast is predominantly fatty rather than glandular and the skin still has good elasticity, part of the volume can be removed by liposuction, reducing the extent of the incisions. It does not correct significant sagging, so it is only appropriate in selected cases.

The nipple and areola

In most reductions the nipple and areola remain attached to a pedicle of tissue that carries their blood supply, and they are moved upwards with it. Areola diameter is usually reduced at the same time. In very large reductions, or where the distance the nipple must travel is extreme, a free nipple graft may be the safer option; this changes sensation and rules out breastfeeding, so it is always discussed in advance and never decided during the operation without prior consent.

Recovery, scars and breastfeeding

Breast reduction is performed under general anaesthesia. ELEMENTAL is a day surgical centre; discharge is normally on the same day, with an escort, and drains are used only where the surgeon considers them necessary.

A supportive surgical bra is worn continuously for the first weeks. Most patients take one to two weeks away from desk work, longer for physically demanding jobs. Upper-body exercise, running and lifting are restricted for around six weeks. Relief of neck and shoulder symptoms is often noticed early, but swelling takes weeks to settle and the final shape continues to refine over several months.

Scars. A reduction always leaves permanent scars — the pattern depends on the technique. They are raised and pink at first, then flatten and fade over months, to a degree that varies between patients and skin types. Darker phototypes carry a higher risk of hypertrophic or keloid scarring, which is relevant in Dubai’s mixed population and is discussed at the consultation. Smoking and sun exposure both worsen scarring. Scar management is part of the follow-up plan.

Sensation and breastfeeding. Nipple sensation is commonly altered after a reduction and often, though not always, recovers over months. Breastfeeding may be possible when the ducts and pedicle are preserved, but a reduction removes glandular tissue and the ability to breastfeed can be reduced or lost. If future breastfeeding matters to you, say so at the consultation: it affects both the choice of technique and the decision on timing.

Breast reduction and breast health

Tissue removed during a reduction is sent for histological examination. This is routine, not a sign of concern, and occasionally it identifies findings that had not been suspected beforehand; anything of that kind is discussed with you and referred on appropriately.

Before surgery, imaging is arranged according to your age, family history and any symptoms, in line with standard practice. A new lump, skin change, nipple discharge or an unexplained difference between the two sides is investigated before an operation is planned, never afterwards.

After a reduction, routine breast screening continues on the usual schedule. Let the imaging service know you have had surgery, because post-surgical changes such as scarring and fat necrosis have a characteristic appearance and the radiologist needs that history to read the images correctly. Surgery does not remove the need for screening.

Risks and contraindications

Breast reduction is major surgery under general anaesthesia and carries risks you should understand before consenting. Your surgeon and anaesthesiologist go through them in detail, and they are set out in the consent documentation.

Smoking slows healing. Patients are asked to stop well before surgery and throughout recovery. Weight optimisation may be advised before the operation rather than after it.

Surgery may be postponed or declined where there is uncontrolled hypertension or diabetes, a bleeding disorder or anticoagulant therapy that cannot be safely interrupted, active infection, significant cardiac or respiratory disease, or an unresolved breast finding requiring investigation. Pregnancy and breastfeeding are contraindications.

What surgery does not do. A reduction does not stop the breast changing afterwards: pregnancy, weight change and ageing all continue to affect shape and size. It is not a weight-loss operation. Individual results vary and no specific outcome, including a specific final cup size, can be promised.

Cost of breast reduction in Dubai

Breast reduction from AED 30,000. The final price is confirmed in writing after the surgical consultation and depends on the extent of the correction.

A reduction is quoted individually. The figure depends on the volume to be removed, the technique, the length of the operation, the type of anaesthesia and the level of post-operative care required. ELEMENTAL therefore does not publish a single price for the surgery itself — you receive a written quotation after the surgical consultation, before you commit to anything.

Consultation fees start from AED 600. The fee depends on the DHA grade of the doctor you see: General Practitioner AED 600, Specialist AED 680, Consultant AED 750. A breast reduction consultation is with a Specialist Plastic Surgeon and is currently AED 680 (Consultant Plastic Surgeon: from AED 750). Prices are current as of 11 August 2026 and may change; the fee applicable to your appointment is confirmed when you book.

The written quotation covers the surgeon’s fee, anaesthesia, use of the operating theatre and the scheduled follow-up visits. Pre-operative laboratory tests and imaging, medication, the surgical bra and histology of the removed tissue are itemised separately.

Insurance. Reduction is one of the few breast operations that is sometimes carried out for a documented medical indication rather than for appearance, and some policies distinguish between the two. ELEMENTAL currently works on a self-pay basis; the clinic issues an itemised invoice and a medical report, and the decision on any reimbursement rests with your insurer. We do not predict that outcome for you, and nothing is billed to an insurer on your behalf.

A consultation and clinical assessment are required before any procedure can be planned, and individual results vary. ELEMENTAL Day Surgical Center, Jumeirah 1, Dubai. DHA licence 5323888.

Risks and limitations are set out in the same conversation as the benefits.
