Laboratory Diagnostics in Dubai

The laboratory service at ELEMENTAL Day Surgical Center in Jumeirah 1, Dubai, covers testing for the clinic's own patients — before planned procedures and during treatment — and testing by referral, when your doctor elsewhere has written out what needs to be checked. What can be tested. The range runs from routine to specialised: complete blood count, biochemistry, hormone panels, infection screening, coagulation studies, immunology, tumour markers, molecular diagnostics and toxicology. How long results take depends on the test. Routine haematology and biochemistry come back faster; specialised chemistry, hormone panels and cultures need longer processing. The realistic timeframe for your specific panel is confirmed at booking — we would rather tell you the honest turnaround than promise same-day results for a test that physically takes longer.

Testing before a procedure

Most operations and many treatments at the centre begin with blood work. Because the testing happens in the same building as the department that ordered it, the result reaches the treating doctor without the patient carrying paperwork between clinics.

• General surgery and vascular surgery — pre-operative panels, coagulation studies, and fitness for anaesthesia.
• Plastic surgery — the same pre-operative work-up, completed before an operating date is agreed.
• Proctology and endoscopy diagnostics — blood counts and infection screening before an examination under sedation.
• Dermatology — investigation of hair loss, inflammatory skin conditions and suspected autoimmune causes, where the answer is in the blood rather than on the skin.
• Dentistry and dental implantation — where a medical condition or medication affects healing and needs checking first.

Testing by referral

You do not have to be a patient of the clinic. If a doctor elsewhere has written out what needs to be checked, bring or send the referral and the sample can be taken here. Tell the coordinators which tests are on the list before you come, so that the correct tubes, timing and any preparation are arranged in advance rather than discovered at the door.

What moves a result besides illness

Laboratory values are sensitive to things that have nothing to do with disease. Fasting status and the time of day change glucose, lipids and several hormones. Intense exercise the day before raises muscle enzymes. Dehydration concentrates almost everything. Many medicines and supplements — including biotin, which is common in hair and nail supplements — interfere with specific assays.

This is why the preparation instructions matter and why the same test repeated under different conditions can read differently. Tell the person taking the sample what you are taking, including supplements you would not think of as medication.

Reading a result

A value outside the reference range is not automatically a diagnosis, and a value inside it does not always mean nothing is wrong. Reference ranges are population intervals, and they vary by age, sex, pregnancy and sometimes by the method the laboratory uses — which is why results from two laboratories are not always directly comparable. A result is interpreted alongside symptoms, examination and history, by a doctor. If your testing was ordered elsewhere, take the report back to the doctor who ordered it.

Insurance

It depends on your policy and on whether the testing is medically indicated. Elemental accepts most major insurance plans active in the UAE; screening carried out at your own request, without a medical indication, is normally self-paid. Confirm with your provider before you come, and ask the coordinators for the test codes you need in order to check.

Cost. Panels differ too much for a single price to be honest. Send the coordinators your doctor's referral, or tell them what the testing is for, and you receive the cost of your specific panel before you come in.
