General and Laparoscopic Surgery in Dubai

General surgery at ELEMENTAL Day Surgical Center, Jumeirah 1, 113 Jumeirah Street, under DHA licence 5323888. Operations are performed laparoscopically wherever the diagnosis allows, in a licensed day-surgery theatre with anaesthesia and monitored recovery, and the patient is discharged the same day once recovery criteria are met.

Day surgery is not a lighter version of an operation. It is the same procedure with the same sterility and anaesthesia standards, selected for cases that do not require overnight monitoring. Whether your case qualifies is decided at the consultation, on examination and imaging — not on the phone. Some patients are referred to an inpatient hospital instead, and that is a clinical decision, not an inconvenience.

Procedures

• Hernia repair, laparoscopic. Inguinal, umbilical and incisional hernias. Mesh type and fixation are discussed before surgery, along with the realistic timeline for returning to lifting and sport.
• Laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Gallbladder removal for symptomatic stones. Ultrasound findings and liver function are reviewed first, since not every stone seen on a scan is the cause of the pain.
• Sportsman’s hernia — disrupted groin. Chronic groin pain in athletes, which is frequently misdiagnosed. Assessment separates it from hip, adductor and true hernia pathology before any operation is considered.
• Pilonidal disease. From simple drainage to definitive excision. Recurrence rates differ substantially between techniques, and this is discussed openly at the consultation.
• Laparoscopic colorectal cancer surgery. Performed within a multidisciplinary pathway; staging and oncology planning precede any surgical date.
• Lipoma and cyst removal. Removal of benign soft-tissue lumps under local anaesthesia in most cases, with the specimen sent for examination where indicated.

Who operates, and who gives the anaesthetic

Both hold a current Dubai Health Authority licence at this facility, and the designations below are the ones the DHA registry carries. Either licence can be checked in the public Sheryan registry.

• Dr. Evgenii Degtiarev — Specialist Anaesthesiologist, DHA licence 44500756-001. Anaesthesia is given and monitored by a specialist anaesthetist throughout.

You meet the operating surgeon at the consultation, and he is the one who operates.

Before an operation is scheduled

Blood tests, imaging and an anaesthetic assessment are completed before a date is agreed. Smoking, uncontrolled diabetes, obesity and blood-thinning medication all affect both the operation and the healing, and each changes the plan rather than simply being noted. Where a condition is better managed without surgery, the surgeon will say so.

The day of the operation

You are admitted, seen by the surgeon and the anaesthetist, and consent is confirmed. The operation follows under the agreed anaesthesia, then a monitored recovery period. Discharge happens once specific criteria are met — stable observations, pain controlled, able to drink and to walk with help. You must be accompanied home and cannot drive yourself; arrange this before the day.

Recovery and follow-up

Laparoscopic access means smaller wounds than open surgery, but it is still surgery: expect soreness, tiredness and restrictions on lifting and driving for a defined period. The surgeon gives those periods in writing for your specific operation, because they differ between a hernia repair, a gallbladder removal and an excision for pilonidal disease. Follow-up visits are scheduled at the centre, and wound checks and suture removal are done here rather than sent elsewhere.

If you are travelling after surgery, discuss the timing before you book a flight. Air travel too soon after an abdominal operation is a question for the surgeon, not for the airline.

Risks

Every operation carries risk. For the procedures listed here that means bleeding, infection, wound-healing problems, injury to nearby structures, a reaction to anaesthesia, blood clots, and recurrence — hernias and pilonidal disease can both come back, and recurrence rates differ by technique. A laparoscopic operation may need to be converted to an open one during surgery if what is found requires it; this is a recognised part of the procedure, not a complication in itself. Risks specific to you and to your operation are explained before you consent.
