Dental Treatment under Sedation or General Anaesthesia in Dubai

• adults with significant fear of dental treatment;
• a strong gag reflex that makes treatment in the chair difficult;
• several treatments that can reasonably be combined into one planned session;
• difficulty staying in the dental chair for a long time.

It is not offered to children. Some medical conditions need additional assessment first; the anaesthesiologist explains this at the consultation.

• Procedural sedation: the patient is relaxed and drowsy, breathes independently and can respond; it is given and monitored by the anaesthesiologist.
• General anaesthesia: the patient is fully asleep for the procedure and is looked after by the anaesthesiologist throughout. Sessions under general anaesthesia are planned for the first half of the day.

The method is chosen for each patient; one is not "stronger" or "better" than the other.

Treatment that is clinically appropriate for the session, as planned by the dentist — for example fillings, root canal treatment, professional cleaning, extractions and other dental procedures. The exact plan is agreed at the consultation.

1. Dental consultation (AED 850): examination, X-rays or CBCT if needed, written treatment plan.
2. Assessment by the anaesthesiologist: health questions, tests if needed, choice of method, written preparation instructions.
3. Treatment day in the day surgery theatre, with monitoring throughout.
4. Recovery in the centre until discharge criteria are met.
5. Going home with an accompanying adult; follow-up as agreed.

• Fasting and medication instructions are given in writing by the anaesthesiologist.
• After sedation or anaesthesia, do not drive or make important decisions for 24 hours; leave the centre only with an accompanying adult.

Like any medical intervention, sedation and anaesthesia carry risks, which the anaesthesiologist discusses with you before you give consent. Individual results of treatment vary.
