What causes a double chin

• Submental fat — a pad of fat under the chin. It can persist despite weight loss and is often inherited.
• Skin laxity — skin that has lost firmness with age or after weight change.
• Anatomy — chin projection, jaw shape and the position of the neck structures. These affect what any treatment can change, so they are assessed first.

How the assessment works

At the consultation the doctor examines the area, asks about your goals and medical history, and explains which options apply to you, what each involves, the recovery, the risks and the alternatives. Some people need one treatment, some a combination, and some none.
