Eyelid Reconstruction
Which lesions
Benign cysts and papillomas; moles and seborrhoeic keratoses; xanthelasma (yellow cholesterol plaques); dermoid and epidermoid cysts in children; and lesions suspicious for basal cell carcinoma or other eyelid skin cancers. Every lesion removed is sent for histological examination.
At ELEMENTAL eyelid reconstruction and lesion removal are performed by Dr. Hanna Barinova, Specialist Ophthalmologist.
Removal
Small lesions are removed under local anaesthesia in 15–30 minutes with direct closure. Lesions near the eyelid margin or the tear duct require careful planning so that the lid contour and tear drainage are preserved. Suspicious lesions are removed with a margin of healthy tissue and confirmed clear by histology before the reconstruction is finalised.
Reconstruction
When a lesion — or an injury — leaves a defect in the eyelid, the eyelid is rebuilt using local tissue: flaps from the adjacent eyelid or cheek, and, for full-thickness defects, grafts of skin or eyelid lining. The aim is a closing, functioning eyelid first and a good appearance second. Reconstruction is graded by complexity and is performed under local anaesthesia with sedation or under general anaesthesia as a day procedure.
Eyelid skin cancer — the pathway
An eyelid lesion suspected of being cancer is examined, photographed and biopsied. ELEMENTAL's dermatology service — see /dermatology — participates where dermoscopic assessment is needed. Once histology confirms the diagnosis and the margins, reconstruction is completed, and the patient is followed up on a schedule appropriate to the tumour type.
Risks
Scarring, asymmetry, notching of the eyelid margin, incomplete closure, recurrence of the lesion, and the need for further surgery. Individual outcomes vary and are discussed before any procedure.
Cost
Consultation: AED 1,100. Removal and reconstruction are priced by complexity after examination and confirmed in writing.
