Recovery following body contouring surgery varies depending on the procedures performed and the extent of treatment. General recovery guidelines include:

• Immediately after surgery – you may experience swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort, which are normal and part of the healing process
• Compression garments – may be recommended to support healing and reduce swelling
• Activity – most patients return to light activities within 1–2 weeks
• Exercise – strenuous activity and heavy lifting should be avoided for 4–6 weeks
• Follow-up appointments – scheduled to monitor your progress and ensure optimal healing

Body contouring is not one operation. It is a group of procedures that address different tissue, and the plan is written after examination rather than chosen from a list. At the consultation the surgeon assesses skin quality, the thickness and distribution of fat, the state of the abdominal muscles and any scars, and then explains which of the following is being proposed and why.

The assessment is physical. The surgeon lifts and pinches the tissue, asks you to stand and to lie down, and watches how the skin behaves when the fat under it moves. Two people with similar photographs can need two different plans.

• Weight stable for at least six months — further weight change alters the result.
• General health documented, with any chronic condition under control and a full medication list, including blood thinners, GLP-1 weight medicines and hormonal treatment.
• No smoking for the period the surgeon specifies before and after, because nicotine narrows small vessels and slows healing.
• An understanding that tissue contraction after radiofrequency develops over months and differs from person to person.

There are situations where we say no, and say it at the consultation rather than afterwards: when the main problem is skin excess and a device is being requested instead of an abdominoplasty; when a hernia at the umbilicus needs repair first; when weight is still changing; when the expectation is a specific number of centimetres or a dress size. Being told that a procedure does not suit you is a legitimate outcome of a consultation.

A surgical consultation with a Specialist Plastic Surgeon is currently AED 680 (Consultant Plastic Surgeon: from AED 750). The consultation covers history, examination, standard photographs and a written plan; the procedure itself is quoted separately, in writing, before anything is booked.

Combining is common and is decided on safety grounds, not on convenience. What limits it is total operating time, blood loss, the volume of fat removed and the anaesthetic load — not what the patient would prefer to have done at once. The surgeon and the anaesthetist review this together, and where a combination exceeds what a day surgical centre should undertake in one sitting, it is staged.

Typical pairings that are assessed together: liposuction of the flanks with an abdominoplasty; BodyTite with liposuction in the same area; abdominoplasty with a hernia repair where one is present. When procedures are staged, the interval between them is planned at the first consultation so the recovery time can be arranged around work and travel.

Individual results vary. The treatment options, the number of areas and the type of anaesthesia are decided after examination by a DHA-licensed physician, and every plan carries risks that are explained to you in writing before you consent.
