What Dr. Banerjee sees patients for
Most appointments fall into a small number of groups, and the plan is set after history, examination and the tests that are actually indicated — not a standard panel for everyone.
- Reflux and upper abdominal symptoms — heartburn, regurgitation, difficulty swallowing, indigestion that does not settle, suspected Helicobacter pylori.
- Bowel symptoms — irritable bowel syndrome, a change in bowel habit, chronic constipation or diarrhoea, bloating, unexplained weight loss.
- Inflammatory bowel disease — Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis: diagnosis, monitoring and long-term management.
- Rectal bleeding and anaemia — assessed rather than assumed, with iron-deficiency anaemia investigated from both ends of the gut.
- Liver — abnormal liver blood tests, fatty liver, hepatitis, jaundice.
- Pancreas and bile ducts — pancreatitis, bile duct stones, strictures and pancreatobiliary disease. This is Dr. Banerjee's subspecialty area, developed at a regional hepato-pancreato-biliary centre in the NHS.
- Screening — bowel cancer screening and surveillance where family history, age or a previous polyp makes it appropriate.
Procedures Dr. Banerjee performs
Dr. Banerjee holds a CCT in Gastroenterology and General Internal Medicine and performs diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy: gastroscopy, colonoscopy, push enteroscopy, ERCP, endoscopic ultrasound, stricture dilatation, enteral stent placement and feeding tube placement. At ELEMENTAL the procedures are carried out in a DHA-licensed day surgical centre with sedation and same-day discharge; where a case belongs in a hospital — an emergency, a complex therapeutic procedure or a patient whose general health requires inpatient cover — that is said at the consultation and the referral is arranged rather than the procedure being fitted into the wrong setting.
When to see a gastroenterologist rather than wait
Some symptoms are worth an appointment sooner: difficulty swallowing, vomiting blood or black stools, rectal bleeding, unintentional weight loss, a persistent change in bowel habit beyond a few weeks, iron-deficiency anaemia found on a blood test, jaundice, or severe upper abdominal pain radiating to the back. These are not diagnoses in themselves — they are the symptoms that decide the order in which things are investigated.
Consultation, languages and cost
A consultation with Dr. Banerjee is AED 750 — the consultant tariff at ELEMENTAL — and covers history, examination, review of any imaging or blood results you bring, and a written plan. Endoscopy, if indicated, is quoted separately and in writing before it is booked: gastroscopy with sedation from AED 8,000 and colonoscopy with sedation from AED 9,000, each covering the sedation, histology and recovery. Prices updated: September 2026.
Bring your current medication list, previous endoscopy or imaging reports, and recent blood results if you have them. Consultations are in English, Hindi or Bengali. ELEMENTAL works on a self-pay basis and issues an itemised invoice and a medical report for you to claim reimbursement from your insurer yourself.
