Dermoscopy

Current information will be available here shortly

  • Precision skin examination for early diagnosis. Performed by a DHA-licensed dermatology specialist

At ELEMENTAL Day Surgical Center in Dubai, we offer professional dermoscopy as part of our comprehensive dermatology services. Dermoscopy is a non-invasive diagnostic technique that uses a specialized handheld device with magnification and polarized light to examine skin lesions, moles, and other pigmented structures in exceptional detail.

This advanced technology allows visualization of subsurface skin structures—pigment networks, vascular patterns, and other microscopic features—that remain invisible to the naked eye. All procedures are performed by Dr. Olivera Nikolic, a DHA-licensed dermatology specialist with extensive clinical experience, ensuring that every patient receives accurate diagnosis and appropriate clinical recommendations.

What is Dermoscopy and Why Is It Performed?

Dermoscopy (also known as dermatoscopy or epiluminescence microscopy) is a non-invasive, in-clinic examination that provides a magnified, illuminated view of the skin's outer layers. The procedure involves placing a handheld dermoscope directly on the skin surface. The device combines magnification (typically 10x) with polarized or immersion oil lighting, which reduces surface reflection and allows the observer to see deeper structures within the epidermis and upper dermis.

Dermoscopy is widely recognized as an essential clinical tool for:

  • Differentiating benign from atypical skin lesions – Many pigmented lesions appear similar to the naked eye but show distinct dermoscopic patterns. Dermoscopy improves diagnostic accuracy for pigmented skin lesions compared with clinical inspection alone
  • Early detection of skin cancer – Dermatologists trained in dermoscopy can identify early signs of melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers at their most treatable stages
  • Monitoring skin changes over time – Sequential dermoscopic imaging allows precise tracking of lesion evolution, particularly important for patients with multiple atypical moles
  • Reducing unnecessary biopsies – Clear benign dermoscopic patterns can reassure both patient and clinician, avoiding invasive procedures where clinically appropriate

Who Should Consider a Dermoscopy Examination?

A dermoscopy examination may be clinically appropriate for individuals who:

  • Have multiple moles or pigmented skin lesions
  • Present with a mole that has changed in size, shape, colour, or texture
  • Have a personal or family history of melanoma or non-melanoma skin cancer
  • Report a new or suspicious skin lesion
  • Have a history of significant cumulative sun exposure or repeated sunburn, particularly during childhood or adolescence
  • Possess fair skin, freckles, or a tendency to burn rather than tan (Fitzpatrick skin types I–II)
  • Have atypical (dysplastic) naevi requiring regular monitoring

The International Dermoscopy Society recognizes dermoscopy as a valuable tool for dermatologists in both screening and diagnostic settings

What to Expect During Your Dermoscopy Consultation

  • Pre-examination – No specific preparation is required. You are encouraged to remove any makeup, self-tanner, or nail polish from the areas to be examined, as these can interfere with visualisation
  • During the examination – Dr. Olivera Nikolic will conduct a thorough visual assessment of your skin using a handheld dermoscope. The device is placed gently against the skin surface; the procedure is completely painless and requires no needles, incisions, or anaesthesia. Depending on clinical indication, digital dermoscopic images may be captured and stored for future comparison. A full-body skin examination typically takes 15–30 minutes
  • Post-examination – You will receive a clear explanation of the findings. Stable benign lesions require no further action. Lesions with any atypical features may be recommended for interval monitoring or, if clinically indicated, referral for biopsy. Dr. Nikolic will provide a personalised management plan based on your individual risk profile and examination findings
