How to Keep Your Leg Veins Healthy – Recommendations from a Vascular Surgeon

At ELEMENTAL Day Surgical Center, our phlebologist, Dr. Peter Lassu, shares simple but effective advice to help you maintain healthy leg veins and prevent the progression of venous disease. Following these daily habits can significantly reduce your risk of developing varicose veins, spider veins, and chronic venous insufficiency.

General recommendations for vein health:

  • Stay active – Regular walking, swimming, cycling, and calf muscle exercises improve venous return. Avoid prolonged standing or sitting
  • Elevate your legs – When resting, raise your legs above heart level for 15‑20 minutes several times a day to help blood flow back to the heart
  • Wear compression stockings – If you already have early signs of vein problems, medical‑grade compression stockings (Class 1 or 2) can support your veins and relieve symptoms. Always consult a phlebologist before purchasing
  • Maintain a healthy weight – Excess body weight puts additional pressure on leg veins, increasing the risk of valve failure
  • Avoid tight clothing – Restrictive garments around the waist, groin, or thighs can impair venous circulation
  • Stay hydrated – Drink enough water to keep blood viscosity normal and reduce the risk of clot formation
  • Quit smoking – Smoking damages blood vessels, accelerates atherosclerosis, and weakens vein walls
  • Avoid high heels for long periods – Flat or low‑heeled shoes promote better calf muscle pump function

When you must see a phlebologist – symptoms that require professional consultation

If you experience any of the following signs, do not rely solely on home care. Schedule a consultation with a vascular specialist for a venous duplex ultrasound and accurate diagnosis:

  • Visible changes: Bulging, twisted, or rope‑like veins (varicose veins) or clusters of red/blue spider veins on your legs
  • Leg heaviness and fatigue: A dragging, heavy sensation, especially after prolonged standing or sitting, that improves when you elevate your legs
  • Swelling: Persistent swelling in the ankles, calves, or feet, often worsening towards the evening
  • Pain or aching: Dull, throbbing pain, burning sensation, or muscle cramps in the lower legs, frequently interfering with sleep
  • Itching or skin changes: Itchy skin over the affected veins, dry or discoloured skin (brownish pigmentation near the ankles)
  • Restless legs: An uncontrollable urge to move your legs, particularly at night, disturbing your rest
  • Leg ulcers or wounds: Slow‑healing sores, especially around the inner ankle – this may indicate advanced venous disease
  • Sudden painful swelling, redness, warmth: Could be a sign of superficial thrombophlebitis (inflammation and a blood clot in a superficial vein) – seek medical advice promptly

Remember: Early diagnosis and minimally invasive treatment (laser, radiofrequency, sclerotherapy, microphlebectomy) can prevent complications such as skin ulcers, bleeding, or deep vein thrombosis. Do not ignore your leg symptoms.

Take care of your veins – they have to last a lifetime. Book a consultation with Dr. Peter Lassu at ELEMENTAL Day Surgical Center, Dubai.
